The challenge
During a technical visit to a logistics platform handling refrigerated goods, the maintenance manager shared a key concern: energy loss during loading and unloading operations was increasing operating costs, impacting product quality, and overloading the facility’s climate control systems.
The warehouse was equipped with traditional loading docks using hinged-lip dock levelers. This meant that trucks had to open their doors before backing into the dock, exposing the refrigerated cargo to external temperatures even before unloading began.
The analysis
We observed the entire operation on site:
How did drivers approach and dock?
- How long were the truck doors open before docking?
- Where exactly was cold air escaping?
- How was this affecting product integrity and energy bills?
One thing was clear: opening the truck doors outside the facility was causing immediate and unnecessary thermal loss, both inside the trailer and in the warehouse.
Digging deeper
To better understand the issue, we consulted several refrigerated truck body manufacturers. Their insight confirmed our observations: traditional dock storing places are not designed for thermal efficiency or ergonomic operation.
A partial fix wouldn’t solve the problem. We needed a complete rethink of the process.
The solution
We developed a vertical dock leveler system, which allows trailers to remain sealed until fully docked. Once the truck is in position, doors are opened from inside the facility, keeping the thermal envelope intact.
This solution offers multiple operational benefits:
- Significantly reduced energy loss, both from the trailer and the building.
- Improved hygiene and product protection, minimizing outside exposure.
- Faster, more ergonomic operations, with fewer maneuvers for drivers.
- Better compliance with regulations for cold chain logistics.
The result
After implementing this solution, the client achieved:
- Lower energy consumption in refrigerated zones.
- A safer and more efficient working environment for dock staff.
- Improved control over product quality and cold chain compliance.
This project highlights how combining client feedback, field observation, and collaborative engineering can lead to a smarter, more effective solution.
What are the differences between both types of truck loading ramps?

- The truck is positioned with its rear facing the dock door, maintaining a certain distance from it.
- The driver gets out of the truck and opens the truck’s rear doors from the outside.
- At this point, warm air enters the truck, filling the volume not occupied by the cargo.
- The driver gets back in the truck and reverses it until it makes contact with the loading dock.
- Inside the warehouse, the sectional door is opened and the dock leveler is lowered to begin the loading/unloading operation.
- Once the operation is complete, the driver pulls the truck forward.
- The driver gets out and closes the truck doors again.

- Inside the warehouse, the sectional door is opened, and the truck doors are opened from within the facility.
- Loading and unloading are carried out once the vertical dock leveler is positioned.
- The truck doors are closed, the driver gets back in, and departs for the destination.
